Shipping, logistics, and the reality of running a small keyboard business
We wanted to take a moment to explain how OZO Keyboards actually works behind the scenes—the shipping, the timelines, the challenges, and what we're doing to make things better.
Not because we need to justify ourselves, but because we think you deserve to know what's going on when you order from us.
The Current Setup
When you place an order with us, it gets fulfilled directly from our suppliers in Asia (Mainly China & Japan) via air freight. We ship orders as they come, in small batches, almost daily, rather than batching them up, which means your order goes out quickly from our end.
The whole journey—supplier to air freight to UK customs to your door—usually takes between 4-14 days. Right now we're just past the Christmas/New Years period which caused a bit of disruption, which means couriers and customs are still dealing with higher volumes, but as things settle down in January and February, those delivery times should get even tighter.
Why not just stock everything in the UK?
It's a fair question, and the honest answer is: we're not big enough yet.
To make sea freight work, you need to order in really large quantities—and then wait. Production typically takes up to 50 days, then shipping adds another 40-60 days on top. So you're looking at 90-110 days from placing an order to having stock in hand, and that requires tying up serious capital for months at a time.
We're working on it. We're investing our own money into the business and looking at financing options to help us scale up, but it's a gradual process. For now, air freight lets us operate more flexibly—we can offer you a much wider range of products, keep our prices competitive, and avoid the risk of ordering huge quantities of something that might not sell.
The downside is that you're waiting longer than you would from a big retailer with warehouses full of stock. We know that's not ideal, but it's where we are right now, and we're actively working to change it.
What's Changing
The business is growing (genuinely, thank you for that), and growth means we can start doing things differently.
More UK Stock
We're signing bigger contracts with suppliers now, which means we can start placing those larger sea freight orders. It's happening gradually, but over the coming months you'll see more and more products available for next-day dispatch from the UK. The popular stuff will come first, and we'll build from there.
Better Tracking
One thing that frustrates us—and probably you too—is not having a clear presentation for our customers to know where their products are as they progress through the network. We're building a tool that'll give you live updates as your order moves through the network, from our freight forwarder all the way to your door. Proper transparency at every step (this is being worked on actively by Vitalii).
Honest Communication
We already show shipping estimates on every product page because we think it's important you know what to expect before you order. We're not interested in hiding information or making promises we can't keep. If something's going to take two weeks, we'll tell you it's going to take two weeks.
Working With Other UK Stores
We're also exploring ways to collaborate with other UK keyboard shops. If we can work together—sharing resources, improving logistics, supporting each other—it makes the whole experience of buying from UK stores better for everyone. It's early days, but it's something we're thinking about.
Why This Matters
There are easier ways to run this business. We could dropship everything and never touch the stock. We could mark things up heavily and pretend we're offering some premium service. We could be vague about delivery times and hope people just forget they ordered.
But that's not what we're interested in doing.
We started OZO Keyboards because we care about mechanical keyboards, and we wanted to build something in the UK that was honest, transparent, and actually gave a damn about the customer experience. That means being upfront when things aren't perfect, working hard to improve them, and treating you like an actual person rather than just another order number.
It's not always easy, and we're definitely still figuring bits of it out as we go. But every order, every bit of feedback, every customer who chooses to support us—it all helps us get closer to being the kind of business we want to be.
Thanks
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. And if you've ordered from us, double thanks—it genuinely means a lot.
We'll keep you updated as things develop. We're not going to spam you, but when there's something worth sharing, we'll let you know.
If you ever have questions or just want to chat about keyboards, you know where to find us.
